THIS CCTV footage is said to show the “strange” moment a shopper was almost robbed in a Newland Avenue convenience store.

The man, who does not want to be named, was in the shop on Saturday, October 3, at around 6pm when the incident happened.

He says another man tried to “mug” him. But the “strange nature of what happened” has left him confused - and scared about going to the shops.

Humberside Police have confirmed they are investigating the attempted robbery.

The CCTV footage, shown was captured by the shop.

Posting in the Hull Traffic and Travel Facebook group about what happened, the man claimed: “About 6pm today, a bloke who’s about 5ft 10in, short black hair, slightly tanned and white tracksuit jacket tried to mug me in Newland Convenience Offlicence. He had an Eastern European accent.

“He went into my pocket and grabbed my card, but I snatched it back. Then he tried to say he’s not seen me in 16 years, which isn’t true because I’ve never met him. Then he wouldn’t let me out the shop but, eventually, he moved out the way. Police are aware. Be very careful.”

Speaking in more detail about what he believed had happened, he said the man told him the whole thing was just a “joke”.

“I’d just paid for my things with my card,” he said. “I put my card back in my pocket and someone came into the store. He didn’t have a face mask on and he was looking right at me, staring.

“He walked over to me and put his hand in my pocket. I think it was my phone he took or my wallet. I snatched it back from him and put it back in my pocket.

“He was like ‘Oh, what you doing I’m sorry, I’m joking, I’m joking’.

“I put my arm out and I said don’t take another step forward, that’s far enough.

“He said I’ve not seen you in 16 years. He was talking to me and talking to the shop keeper.

“He was trying to shake my hands and I said ‘I’m not going to shake your above,

hand, but I’m going that’s the end of it.”

The man claims the would-be robber then blocked his way out of the shop, and started taking his jacket off “like he wanted a fight”.

The man says he then asked the stranger to leave him alone, but he kept insisting he was “only joking” and tried to shake his hand.

Eventually, he shook order to leave the shop.

“I’m pretty scared,” he said. “It’s put me off going to the shops.

“I’m not sure if he was just having a joke or he was actually trying to steal from me. It was a strange thing to do.

“If he really wanted my phone or my wallet, I think he would have tried much harder to get it.

“He would have used force and he didn’t. It was very easy to get my things back from him.

“All I had to do was snatch it out his hand and put it back in my pocket. “I think he might have been drunk.” A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said officers are investigating an attempted robbery.

“We are investigating the attempted robbery of a man in a convenience store in Newland Avenue that happened at around 6pm on Saturday, October 3,” she said.

“A man is reported to have tried to take the victims mobile phone from him. The phone was taken back and thankfully the victim, although shaken, was uninjured in the incident.
