A “loving” east Hull dad-of-five tragically died after overdosing on prescription drugs.

Shaun Coggin, 32, of Barnsley Street, took a fall and hit his head after taking too many tramadol tablets, when he had a fit and heart attack.

He was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary on October 18 last year, but sadly brain stem tests showed that Mr Coggin could not be saved and he died the next day.

An inquest held at Hull Coroners’ Court found that Mr Coggin died due to tramadol toxicity that was at an almost lethal level.

It was also heard that he smoked cannabis daily and had been

addicted to Spice after leaving prison. Mr Coggin was also known to take cocaine and ecstasy and had been in contact with a substance abuse service to curb his addictions.

It was heard how it was not uncommon that he would take around a weeks’ worth of the tramadol medication in two days to get a “high”, since his medication began in 2017, and this is what he had done in the lead up to his death.

He was described by his partner in court as a “loving and great father”,.

On the afternoon of his overdose, Shaun and his partner were sat on the sofa together enjoying their time with their newborn baby.

In a statement to the court, she said that after an hour or so Shaun’s eye started twitching, which was a sign that he was going to have a fit due to his epilepsy and he told her he had taken too many tablets.

Shaun then headed into the kitchen for a cigarette, but fell and hit his head on the floor. His partner rang for an ambulance and performed CPR.

Shaun was the eldest of his siblings and attended Amy Johnson School.

Dr Karen Ramsden carried out a postmortem and found that he had died due to the effects of tramadol toxicity.

Coroner Rosemary Baxter gave a conclusion that Mr Coggin’s death was drug-related.

She said: “Shaun used tramadol to excess over many years as he enjoyed the feeling that an excess of the drug gave him.

“Sadly on this occasion, he took too many tramadol tablets, which killed him”.
