Hessle hosts Match Play
THE standing of Hessle’s 18 hole course as one of the north’s leading championship tests was once again confirmed with the hosting of the Yorkshire Match Play Championship.
This event sees the leading 32 players from the season’s Yorkshire Amateur Championship play off for the Match Play title.
East Riding interest centred on Hornsea’s Jack Maxey and Nick Raybould and Hull Golf Club’s William Storr.
Unfortunately Maxey and Storr’s interest in the event did not extend beyond round one with Maxey losing two down to Hillsborough’s Jon Berrisford, whilst Storr had little answer to the firepower of Shipley’s Max Berrisford, losing by 5 and 4.
Raybould fared much better, seeing off the challenge of Cookridge’s Alfie Storer by 2 and 1 in round one, then accounting for Wheatley’s Neil Stones, shaking hands again on the 17th in round two.
Unfortunately a local win was not to be as in the quarter-final Raybould met his match, losing a closely fought encounter on the 18th green to the experienced Jack Lampkin (Bracken Ghyll).
The eventual winner of the event was Huddersfield’s Josh Morton, who overcame Rotherham’s Charlie Daughtrey by 5 & 4.
■Playing in a recent white tee medal at his home club Ganton, Steve Pybus achieved his seventh golfing career hole in one.
An East Riding Union regular, who has made over fifty appearances for the Union, he used a seven iron and his well struck shot went into the cup on the 158-yard fifth hole.
■The Hull & District Ladies Winter Golf Alliance got its 2020-21 season underway at Hull where the Cottingham Parks pairing of Sharen Helm (26) and Annette Jackson (27) proved strongest, posting a six-under-par four ball better ball stableford score of 42 points.
They edged home by a point from the home club pairing of Eleanor Dakkak (26) and Ade Palmer (30).
Other leading scores: 40pts Pam Jones (29) & Peggy Fairburn (29) Hessle, 38pts Pru Charlsom (21) & Pat Rozenbroek (29) Hull, 38pts Jackie Fortnum (21) & Lynne Myers (21) Hull, 37pts Lynda Lucas (18) & Kay Wise (18) Ganstead Park, 37pts Karen Hunt (19) & Sue Gurling (22) Cottingham Parks.
