Neville blasts top flight’s spending level

FORMER Manchester United captain Gary Neville has hit out at the Premier League after they spent £1.24bn in the summer transfer window whilst EFL clubs continue to fight for survival.

Clubs, including Hull City which find themselves below the Premier League continue to struggle due to the financial impact of COVID-19 without supporters in stadiums, with the Tigers’ last game in front of fans coming at the KCOM in February against Leeds United.

League One and League Two clubs, in particular, are feeling the pinch, with many predicting that clubs will soon enter administration and further financial difficulty.

So strong are those concerns that EFL chief executive Rick Parry admitted only last week that clubs were doing their level best to ensure the season was completed.

As yet, a rescue package with the Premier League or UK government is yet to be agreed, despite Boris Johnson suspending all pilot events to welcome a select number of supporters back into football stadiums, while allowing fans to return to concert venues and cinemas.

In reality, its unlikely fans will be back into grounds until March 2021, which has seen the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Charlton Athletic plead for a rethink on social media.

Neville, of course, owns League Two outfit Salford City alongside the rest of the ‘Class of 92’ which includes Ryan Giggs, Paul

Scholes and Nicky Butt.

With Premier League clubs spending big this summer once again, he issued a timely reminder that EFL clubs are still in the mire.

Quote tweeting Sky Sports’ report that top-flight clubs had spent £1.24bn this summer, he wrote: “That “Covid Financial Hole“not materialising!! #Eflrescuepackage”
