‘We don’t go out past a certain time of night’

-

RESIDENTS in Peel Street have been left terrified after a man died from injuries sustained following a serious assault in Peel Street on Wednesday.

Police confirmed a number of people have been arrested in relation to it.

Residents have described the moment they saw “blue flashing lights” outside a shop on the street late on Wednesday evening.

They say they are now scared to leave their homes at night and many want to move from the area.

Terry Stephenson said: “It was so scary. I have got little ones at home and this just happened so close to the house.

“It’s really scary and I’m very worried.”

Chantelle Smith said she only noticed something had happened when her partner Tony Launn went to the shop on Wednesday evening.

She said: “We needed some coffee and we were going to the shop. We saw lots of blue flashing lights.

“There were coppers and ambulances everywhere. We didn’t know what had happened until we saw the news on Facebook.

“I thought someone had really hurt themselves or something had happened at the shops.

“It’s so scary. This is happening

all of the time. It was only a couple of months ago there were two stabbings down here and on Hutt Street.”

Tony says crime along Peel Street and the Spring Bank area as a whole makes it “a horrible place”.

He said: “I have a little business selling wax melts and no one even wants to come and collect their orders.

“The other day I heard shouting and looked out of the window and a man around 40 was being kicked and beaten by a group of teenagers, the youngest must have only been about 11.

“I’m from London and it’s getting just as bad around here.

“We don’t even go out past a certain time of night. I feel for the younger generation growing up.”

Detective Superintendent Simon Gawthorpe said yesterday: “Investigations into the circumstances of the assault are underway and as part of our enquiries so far, a number of people have been arrested, they remain in our custody while enquiries continue.

“We believe there were a large group of people in the area at the time of the assault and we are urging witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist our investigations, to get in touch.”
