Surge in property sales in the region

10,436 AGREED SALES ACROSS COUNTY

-

THE number of agreed house sales in some parts of Yorkshire has more than doubled compared to last year, with people’s lockdown experiences and the recent stamp duty holiday fuelling the market, estate agents have said.

According to latest figures released by Savills there were 10,436 agreed house sales recorded across the county in the four weeks to mid-august this year, a rise of 45 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The highest rise was in Ryedale with an increase of 212 per cent in agreed sales, followed by Harrogate (184 per cent) and Hambleton (177 per cent).

In the East Riding, the figure was 156 per cent while in Hull, the agreed sales figure had increased by 138 per cent in that period.

James Abbott, who heads the residential teams in Yorkshire at Savills, said

despite uncertain economic backdrop recent experiences had encouraged people to reassess their priorities and buyers with the financial security to do so were looking for homes with more space and greater access to the countryside.

He said: “Since the housing market reopened we have seen a surge in the number of sales being agreed. The prime regional and country house markets in particular have an been especially busy. Many predicted that the immediate shift in priorities seen in April was just a response to lockdown, and would be short-lived, but there now appears longer term commitment from buyers.”

Mr Abbott added: “Yorkshire is a very popular relocation market that combines commutability, good schools and high-quality housing stock.

“Numbers of agreed sales have also been substantially boosted by activity in surrounding villages, with particularly strong demand from those who want the benefit of countryside living within striking distance of a bigger, well-serviced town or city.”

The data takes into account activity across all of the main property portals and compares sales agreed in the four weeks to August 16, 2019 with the same period in 2020.
