A BRIDLINGTON thug stole his partner’s dog after headbutting her in a row over his drinking.

Simon Butcher, 45, of Turmer Avenue, had been shopping for his ex-partner on September 4, this year and went to drop it off at her house when things turned violent.

Julia Baggs, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court on Thursday, October 7, that Butcher was “intoxicated” and in a row over his drinking he grabbed his partner by the throat up against a cabinet and headbutted her

Ms Baggs said he then stole the woman’s dog and mobile phone.

She said: “He was arrested the next day and turned violent against the police.”

Butcher struggled against the officers, leaving his leg between the cell door in the van.

When an officer tried to kick it out of the way, Butcher told him: “Break my f****** leg then.”

He then pushed the officer into the cell door, dislocating his shoulder.

Ms Baggs told the court: “He managed to put his shoulder back into the socket.

“The woman’s mobile phone and dog were returned to her.”

The woman said in a victim personal statement read out to the court that she was “very distressed” when Butcher took her dog, which she’d had from a puppy.

The court heard that by committing these offences against his partner, he was in breach of his non-molestation order against her. However, he told the author of his pre-sentence report that he had been told by the woman the order was no longer active.

Shila Whitehead, mitigating, told the court: “He was very upset and distressed and said he had been led to believe by her the order had been discharged. “It was explained to him that it had been his responsibility to find out whether it had. “He told the author of the pre-sentence report that the pair had a toxic xic re l a t i o n n- ship.

“He says ys he is tryying to build ild bridges.

“He didn’t idn’t have a good upbringing g to work from and doesn’t like the person n he has become.

“He knows he has to address his issues in order to lead a law abiding life. He is remorseful and accepts that if he wasn’t drinking he perhaps would not have behaved in the way he did that day.

“The dog may have .been distressed, but he did know him, and he did take him for a walk.”

Hull Crown Court heard Butcher has 44 previous convictions for crimes such as affray, common as assault and th theft. Jailing h him for 14 m months for assault, as theft and an two counts of assaulting an emergency worker worker, Recorder Gavin Doig told Butcher: “You “Yo caused the victim to feel scared sca and she had to run from her own home. “When she came back she found you had taken her dog and her phone. Rather than co-operate with the police you made their lives difficult.

“It is not up to me to tell you and your partner how to live your lives, but I would suggest you stay away from each other in the future. It seems the relationship is bad for both of you.”
