Honeyman: We’ve got to show more fight

FLEETWOOD WANTED IT MORE, SAYS CITY CAPTAIN

-

George Honeyman admitted Fleetwood Town showed more desire during the second half of Hull City’s 4-1 defeat at Highbury, comments which will surely be of concern to boss Grant Mccann.

Joey Barton’s Cod Army arguably shaded the first half of Friday night’s encounter at Highbury, but Honeyman’s equaliser after Harvey Saunders’ 17th minute opener saw the scores level at the break and the visitors right in the game.

Few could have predicted what would then happen in the second 45 minutes.

The stand-in skipper’s sloppy cross-field pass gifted the hosts a glorious chance to open the scoring two minutes into the second half, a chance they gleefully took before going on to add a third and fourth leaving the scoreline to look as dispiriting as City’s second half display.

“In the first half, we weren’t at our best but we were still massively in the game,” said Honeyman.

“It started off in the second half with my mistake and that seemed to be the catalyst for the momentum changing.

“We’ve got to learn to be more resilient.

“We’ve shown that in our first four games but now we’ve got to see what went wrong and we need to have a bit more about us than to capitulate if we go behind.

“I’ve got to take responsibility because I started the slide for the team and we never really got back into it after that.

“At the end of the day, I think they wanted it more.

“Me as a midfielder and I think us as midfielders had to win more second balls and that set the precedent for the game. My mistake in the second half gave them all the momentum.

“That’s something I’ve got to learn from and do better and I can only come out next week and try and make amends.

“I think that was where it was won and lost ultimately.

“We just weren’t able to recover in the second half. It’s a long season and we’re going to have bumps in the road, but if we lose we need to show more fight than what we showed out there.”
