A MAN took to the roof of a Card Factory store in Hull.

Humberside Police closed part of Holderness Road after the man climbed up in the early hours of yesterday. As of 10.30am yesterday, the man had been on the roof for more than 12 hours.

Police officers were assisted in negotiations with the man by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

A fire spokeswoman said firefighters were called to the scene at about 3am by officers from Humberside Police.

They said there was one fire engine, an aerial ladder and a drone at the scene.

The road between Mount Pleasant and Barnsley Street was closed just before 5am.

Buses were forced to divert from the area as emergency services worked to get the man down.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police urged people to avoid the area.

She said: “We’re currently dealing with an incident on Holderness Road, Hull, where a man has taken to a roof.

“Road closures and diversions are in place between Mount

Pleasant and Barnsley Street to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Avoid the area if possible to help us bring it to a safe close.”

Some businesses within the police cordon were not able to open.

Dan Williams, of Eden Mobility, said he was shocked to see the scene when he arrived for work.

He said: “I arrived at the shop at 8.30am and couldn’t believe all of this was going on.

“I was, fortunately, able to open as normal. I hope the person gets down soon.”

Yesterday evening, a Humberside Police statement said: “Road closures on Holderness Road between Mount Pleasant and Barnsley Street have now been lifted, following an earlier incident where a man had taken to a roof.

“The incident has now been resolved safely and we want to thank members of the public for their patience.”
