HULL FAIR MAY BE CANCELLED BUT YOU CAN STILL INDULGE

FOR some of us, a trip to Hull Fair is all about the food.

But even with no fair this year, you don’t have to miss out on all the traditiona­l goodies.

We’ve picked out some Hull Fair-inspired boxes available to buy and being advertised on Facebook. to help you get your foodie fix. 1. Bob Carver’s, Chapel Street

Of course it’s not Hull Fair without Bob Carver’s is it?

The Hull Fair boxes from Bob Carver’s in Chapel Street costs £29.95 including delivery and include:

Bob Carver, 49, said: “Nobody can replicate our patties. We just thought we would put some sweets with them - the favourites of Hull Fair.

“We have already been delivering patties during lockdown.

“We have made about 750 patties to go out today [Friday] about 15 boxes going out [Friday night], which I’m delivering. I’m still in my shop as well in Chapel Street.”

Pleased To Sweet You, based in Hull, provides “an array of confection­ery products using the old imperial measuring system to bring back the nostalgia of purchasing sweets as a child from the local corner shop”.

It is selling a “Hull Fair Box” for £19.99, with local delivery available from £2. Alternativ­ely, customers can collect from its HU4 premises.

For those who live outside of Hull, postage costs £4.99 for standard delivery or £6.99 for next day.

Customers can also get free nextday delivery when they spend £50 or more.

Carl Derving, who runs the company with his wife, said: “We just wanted to provide the food for people locally with the fair not being on this year,” he said.

“We have probably sold more than 50 so far in two weeks, probably 80 per cent of those have been outside of Hull.”

B Bakehouse Bites, which is also Hull-based, is selling Hull Fair Boxes for £12 each. They include:

■ One toffee apple

■ A small bag of peanut brittle

■ Five brandy snap

■ A small bag of cinder toffee

■ Six pieces of vanilla fudge

■ Six pieces of salted caramel fudge

■ A sugar yoyo

Kirsty Woodall, of Bakehouse Bites, said: “I decided to make the Hull Fair boxes after hearing so many family and friends talking about missing the treats this year.

“I started offering them last week and, so far, I have sold out two weeks running.

“I have received some great feedback and the homemade touch seems to be going down a treat.”

Ideally, orders should be taken on Monday or Tuesday for a collection or delivery on Friday or Saturday.

Cocoa Chocolatie­r & Bakehouse, which is based in Trinity Market, and makes “luxury artisan chocolates and cakes, handcrafte­d in Hull” is selling “Hull Fair Feast Boxes”.

Posting on Facebook about it on October 1, it said: “We were pretty excited to head into the stall today as we got to prepare the first of our Hull Fair Feast Boxes.

“We couldn’t fit in a giant cuddly toy, but we think we managed to include plenty of other fairground favourites. ■

“We’re giving our Feast Boxes a special Hull Fair-themed makeover this October so you can still get your hands on all your fairground favourites.”

Its Hull Fair Feast Box costs £12. Each box is designed for one person and includes

■ Two carvery sandwiches served in mini brioche buns (roast pork and stuffing and roast beef and caramelise­d onion)

■ Currywurst sausage roll with mustard and fried onions

■ Mini cheese and onion pie

■ Handmade chocolate covered cinder toffee

■ Chocolate dipped brandy snap (the proper stuff from Wright & Co)

■ Toffee apple brownie

■ A piece of handmade fudge

Generation after generation of Cole’s Family Funfair have pitched their stall in Walton Street for decades, but this October its employees will bring everything from brandy snap and nougat to fudge, candy floss and toffee apples direct to customers.

The family-run business is taking orders via Facebook, and will deliver throughout Hull Fair week in

Ashley Liddell, an employee who came up with the idea, told the Mail: “The service will work by people choosing items off our item list, which is based on what we would usually stock at Hull Fair or simply place an order for an assorted box of the Hull Fair Classics, which are priced at £20.”
