FAMILY DEVASTATED BY PET KILLING

A COTTINGHAM mum who found her beloved pet cat tossed five-foot high in a bramble bush said she is heartbroken.

Eleanor Marrett, of Hull Road, said six-year-old cat Jess was tossed over a fence and covered in bite marks.

She believes the death may have been deliberate after neighbours reported being woken in the early hours of Saturday to a squealing cat and the sight of two men emerging from a nearby field.

Now Eleanor wants to warn other cat owners in the area and hopes that the men will be brought to justice.

“I do think the men had purposely looked for cats to attack, with their dogs, especially after hearing all the other stories lately of similar incidents,” she said.

“I was absolutely gutted. Anyone who knows me knows that my animals mean the world to me.”

Eleanor said neighbours saw two men dressed in dark clothing with hoods up, with a large dark dog and a white one with a German shepherd appearance.

One of the men wiped the dog’s face and mouth and the pair hurried off up the road towards Golf Links Road.

“We had Jess since she was eight weeks old and she was very much a stay in the garden kind of cat,” said Eleanor.

“All the children from Croxby used to stroke her. She would sit on the path waiting for them all to fuss her.

“We didn’t have a cat flap, but she never ventured further then the field. Usually she would come in at bedtime and sleep on my daughter’s bed.

“For some reason she just didn’t come in that night, she sometimes stayed under our hedge.

“To find her thrown 5ft high in a bramble bush - they had obviously taken her off the dog, thrown her into what they thought was an overgrown ditch, but she didn’t fall down.

“We, as a family, are so upset as are my neighbours and their girls. My youngest daughter was so upset she was sick. I’m just grateful we found her and could lay her to rest.”

Eleanor also shared what happened to Jess on Facebook to raise awareness, and she was thankful of the many kind words of support that people sent her.

She now hopes that the police will find those responsible.

“The police need to take it seriously,” she said. “They made fox hunting illegal. Surely dogs ripping apart a family pet isn’t legal?

“Maybe some sort of Facebook group should be set up to see which areas are being targeted.

“The owners, if found guilty, should get their dogs taken off them. I’m sure the dog must have a scratched face.”
