Inquest into death of talented footballer Sly
29-YEAR-OLD DIED IN TRAGIC BOAT ACCIDENT
AN inquest has opened into the death of Sly Houlder, who died in A TRAGIC boat accident while on holiday.
Mr Houlder, 29, a former student at Howden School, was on a hire boat on the River Bure in Norfolk when the incident occurred at about 2pm on Tuesday September 16.
He was transferred to Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, after he was described as being in a “critical condition”, where he sadly died.
The hearing at Norfolk Coroners’ Court heard that Simon, 29, had been swimming in the water when he is thought to have caught his leg on the propeller of the hired boat.
The cause of death was given as a haemorrhage as a result of severe blood loss.
A full inquest into the circumstances of the incident has been scheduled for December 16.
He was airlifted to hospital by the Coastguard, but later died.
Sly, born Simon Alex Houlder, of Bubwith, worked as a joiner and was a keen footballer who played for his local pub team, Bubwith White Swan, and had also been a member of North Duffield Cricket Club.
After his death, tributes poured in for the talented footballer including from his teammates at Bubwith White Swan FC who described him as “a club legend”.
The club has also setup a team fundraiser on Gofundme for Mr Houlder’s family, which has raised more than £10,000.
It reads: “Bubwith White Swan FC would like to help raise as much as possible for Sly’s family during this very difficult time.
“Nobody expected this to happen and the full footballing community are shook up by this. Sly has been a massive part of the club for many years and was an exceptional footballer, a brother and a fantastic friend.
“He was the life of and always brought a everybody’s face.”
Mr Houlder also played for Malt Shovel FC, who posted a tribute on social media which read: “All at our club are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Sly Houlder.
“Sly was a very talented footballer, equally as good on a cricket field who always gave his all the party smile to
for his team-mates. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all connected to the Bubwith club.”
Former team-mates at Cliffe FC, based in Selby, also paid tribute with every player wearing black armbands in his memory for their match last weekend.
The club posted on Twitter: “Every Cliffe FC player wore a black armband in honour of Sly’s memory, and the unforgettable impact he had on the club.
