FOUR year groups have been sent home and told to self-isolate after just one positive coronavirus case at a Bransholme primary school.

All pupils in Year One, Two, Five and Six at St Mary Queen of Martyrs Voluntary Academy in Nidderdale have all been told they have been in contact with the infected person, and told to stay indoors until Tuesday, November 3.

Parents have told the Mail there is a lot of confusion as to why so many bubbles are affected, because schools were grouping bubbles together to prevent a large amount of pupils having to self-isolate should there be a positive case.

One dad, who did not wish to be named said he was not surprised there had been a case, because there is no social distancing in the playground.

He said: “The school says it sticks to guidance, but if this was true only one bubble would have been sent home because there is only one positive case in the school.

“So why are Years One, Two, Five and Six mixing?

“The playground at dropoff and pick-ups is busy, no social distancing at all, it’s like sardines in a tin.”

Parents have also told the Mail they have been told one of the school mums was seen on the school site after testing positive for the virus.

A letter sent home to parents of children who need to isolate said: “We have been made aware that we have a confirmed positive case of coronavirus at St Mary Queen of Martyrs.

“We have followed the national guidance and have identified that your child may have been in close contact with the affected person.

“In line with national guidance your child must stay at home and self isolate until Tuesday, November 3, when they can return to school.”

The school is the 22nd primary or secondary school in the region to report a positive case.

St Mary Queen of Martyrs Voluntary Academy was contacted for comment.
