Mccann’s left frustrated by City’s missed chances
GRANT Mccann admitted his side’s inability to stop crosses coming into the Hull City box proved costly in the 2-1 home defeat to Peterborough, as did their profligacy in front of goal.
City went ahead courtesy of Mallik Wilks’ effort in a first half which saw the league leaders largely dominate, before Posh hit back with a header from Jonson Clarke-salter and a deflected Siriki Demble strike 15 minutes from time.
Both goals came from City’s left side, which left Mccann frustrated, admitting his team were lacklustre defensively for Clarke-slater’s flashing header at a sodden KCOM.
“I thought in the first half we were excellent, the shape of the team we were well disciplined in terms of what we were doing, we knew they were a bit of a threat in the attacking areas,” Mccann told BBC Humberside. “The shape was good, we scored a good goal and we got into some really good areas in the pitch, we just didn’t get that second goal. Second half, we started similar - we started quite well. Then we get done off a cross and it felt to me - I have to watch it back - there were too many crosses coming into our box. We just weren’t getting close enough to the crosser and we end up losing ClarkeHarris in our box. It’s not good enough from us; we’ve been really good at that (stopping the crosses).
Dembele’s effort took a wicked deflection to loop up and over Matt Ingram, but moments later, City saw Wilks’ volley deflect onto a post and wide.
“The second goal that they scored, it’s a bit of skill from Joe Ward on Callum (Elder), he’s trying to do the right thing and he’s done him. It’s just a pull-back where a deflection goes in,” Mccann bemoaned. “We have one at the other end which hits the post and it’s unfortunate.
“I don’t think they had many other opportunities, I thought we were in control of what we were doing - again, we just didn’t get that second goal to equalise as I felt that had we got that one, we’d have gone on to win the game.”
