Super League season to end this weekend?

THE 2020 regular Super League season could be set to come to an end this weekend as the competition considers ambitious changes to keep things interesting.

As reported by Total Rugby League on Sunday evening, the Mail understands talks have taken place which would alter the format of the competition heading into November.

The notion is still at an early stage, with talks to continue later this week before any decision is made regarding the final four weeks of the campaign.

Changes would include bringing the season to an end this weekend after a stacked round which features the Hull and St Helens-wigan derby and introducing a larger play-off competition, including up to eight teams.

At present, the plan is for the top four clubs to progress into the play-offs after the completion of the regular season, with semifinals being played in order to decide who will feature in the Grand Final at the KCOM Stadium and the end of November.

However, the new proposal, which it is believed several clubs are behind, would ensure every game in November has significance.

With no relegation, clubs at the bottom end of the Super League currently have little to play for, a change at this late stage of the season would see interest levels rise with the potential for more clubs being involved in a fourweek long play-off process.

As mentioned, any alteration is far from being formalised and not all teams are behind the idea but it will be discussed in the coming days.
