Pain is still raw a week after tragic death of boy
TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR STEVEN, TEN
IT is a tragedy Hull is still coming to terms with a week after it happened.
Youngsters Steven Duffield and Mason Deakin were having fun on a bike when the horrific collision occurred.
Steven, ten, and Mason, 11, were in Anlaby Road on Monday, October 19, at about 6.10pm when they were hit by a blue BMW.
Both boys suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, where Steven tragically died.
Humberside Police confirmed on Monday that Mason remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
But feelings are still raw and the grief remains a week later.
A huge balloon release to pay tribute to Steven happened in West Park the day after the tragedy with friends and family coming together.
A large number of balloons, flowers and candles remain at the site of the crash in Anlaby Road, close to Selby Street.
Emotional messages have also been left. One read: “Forever one of our gorgeous angels. We love you unconditionally.”
Another said: “Alright Steve. We are gunna miss you so much mate. It was way too soon but we will remember you as the happy, cheeky little boy you were.”
Hull Live readers have also continued to pay tribute to Steven.
One reader said: “This has impacted an amazing community that has come together to show great strength xxx Love to the family. RIP Steven xxx”
Another woman walked past on Sunday and was struck by the tributes.
She said: “So so sad. We have been for a walk tonight and we saw all the balloons, banners and lights. Fly high little man. Sending all our love”
Another woman added: “I didn’t know you personally, but I know people who did and they all have had nothing but good things to say about you Steven. R.I.P little man, my thoughts are with all your family and friends.”
Mason was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he has been in a coma and on life support.
His dad, Jordan Deakin, told Hull Live last week the family is “in bits” as they keep their hopes up that Mason will pull through.
He said: “He is in intensive care on life support and we have been told by doctors that we have got to take it hour by hour at the moment.”
A 30-year-old man arrested at the scene has been released under investigation.
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said last week: “A 30-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving offences has been released under investigation as we continue our enquiries.
“Steven’s family continue to receive support at this difficult time from our specially trained officers and are grateful for all the messages of the love and support pouring in from the public.”
Anyone who can help the investigation should call 101, quoting log 488 of October 19.
