Bizarre call as election moves into final week

- Peter Lowsley.

AS the US election rounds the turn into the last week, the polls are indicating that a blue wave could wash Donald Trump away.

However, as they say in the States, “It’s not over until the fat lady sings”.

The polls could be wrong, or the President might have one last trick up his sleeve.

As a team, the Democrats are also very much the Hull City of politics. They have a regular habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

In a bizarre move so close to the election, the Republican administration has put up a white flag in the battle against Covid-19. It appears they may be taking advice from their very selective pick of medical experts. They look like they are going to switch to herd immunity, rather than try to contain the pandemic.

The idea of letting younger, fitter people live unrestricted, while shielding the more vulnerable until we achieve herd immunity, may seem compelling. Yet, without a credible vaccine, let alone a plan of how to pursue the notion safely, it represents a huge gamble.

All the clever people, like Dr Fauci and Sir Patrick Vallance, know that such a policy could result in vast numbers of deaths, eclipsing what we have seen so far.

Just like the US, we have people here who are pushing herd immunity.

In America, right-minded citizens can only vote and keep their fingers crossed for Trump to be defeated in the election.

In the UK, our leader decided to listen to scientists with actual expertise in pandemic response, rather than those with questionable credentials and suspect motives.
