‘I told them to go and win us the game’ - Mccann

THE message to Keane Lewis-potter, Tom Eaves and Regan Slater was clear from Hull City boss Grant Mccann, as he sent the trio on just shy of the hour with his side trailing 1-0 at Bristol Rovers.

‘Go and win us the game.’

All three scored in the second half as the Tigers roared back from conceding in the opening couple of minutes at the Memorial Stadium, to secure an impressive – and deserved - victory in Bristol.

Rovers were a goal ahead early when a defensive mix-up allowed James Daly to fire past Matt Ingram.

Rocked by that setback, City took a while to settle before taking control of the game midway through the first half.

Despite failing to make their pressure count before and after the break, Mccann’s gamble paid off with LewisPotter netting in the 63rd minute, before Slater converted an Eaves cross 13 minutes later. Eaves netted his first goal of the season in stoppage time to put the seal on a deserved victory.

“It was the worst possible start that we could have had. We had a couple of opportunities to clear the corner and it was a real good finish from Daly,” the Tigers boss said.

“I thought in the first half, we had real control.

“We didn’t test the goalkeeper enough for my liking, but I thought in terms of general play, we were in control.

“They had a decent opportunity at the back end of the first half to make it 2-0 which we probably got away with.

“In the second half I thought we were really good, the subs came on and made a big impact.

“They’ve been waiting patiently to come on and get their chance, especially Tom and Regan.

“It was nice to see Keano get another goal to help us win the game.”

When asked what his message to the substitutes was, Mccann was very clear. “Win us the game,” he said.

“I actually said it to the players before the game, ‘don’t save anything’ – look at the bench we’ve got and if we need them, they’ll come on and win us the game.”
