MP demands answers over ‘unacceptable’ change of plan
DAVID DAVIS VISITS ‘DANGEROUS’ STRETCH OF ROAD IN EAST RIDING
A CONSERVATIVE MP has slammed Highways England for not fulfilling its promise to improve a “dangerous” East Yorkshire junction.
The junction of the A1034 and the A63 South Cave was due to have major improvements this year as part of a plan to make crossing points and footpaths for pedestrians safer.
Highways England issued a press release in January promising to complete the works, but has since turned its back on the scheme, citing cost as an issue.
Last week, Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis demanded an explanation from Highways England for breaking that promise and called on the organisation to return and complete the job.
On Wednesday Mr Davis visited the junction and within half an hour witnessed a pedestrian almost being run over by a HGV.
“It is totally unacceptable that
Highways England promised this scheme on the basis that it would improve pedestrian facilities at the junction and then failed to deliver on that promise,” he said.
“From my visit today it is clear there is a desperate need for improvements at the junction.
“In the half an hour I was at the site I witnessed one pedestrian narrowly miss being run down by a heavy goods vehicle, and other pedestrians struggle to cross the road safely.
“I also heard from local residents who told me that all the scheme has succeeded in doing is increasing the number of near-misses involving vehicles slowing down to turn onto the A63.
“The safety of pedestrians is the paramount concern here.
“It is vital that Highways England now revisit this scheme, deliver what was promised and do so before we see any tragic accidents take place at this dangerous junction.”
