Store sells gifts with a quirky Hull theme

THE HULL SHOP SPECIALISES IN AREA-DEFINING PRODUCTS

- By SOPHIE KITCHING sophie.kitching@reachplc.com @sophiekitching

AN online business specialising in showcasing the “city’s uniqueness to the world” with quirky gifts has launched a Hull 2021 calendar.

Among the gifts are a “Hull sayings pack” and a “Hull chip spice pack”. You can also purchase individual items such as a “Hull dictionary”.

The Hull Shop was established by Paul Muscat, who is “born and bred” Hull.

“I started it [the business] about five years ago,” Mr Muscat said. “I knew Hull had a good sense of humour and I wanted to put that across products.

“It’s about tapping into Hull’s humour. The humour here is quite self-deprecating so it was really focusing on that.”

Mr Muscat has launched a Hull calendar for 2021 and says it is the fifth year he has done so.

“With what’s going on at the moment with the global pandemic, the feedback I’ve got from the calendar is that it’s making people laugh and smile,” he said.

“So it’s [about] tapping into that, because there’s a lot of doom and gloom on the high street.”

Mr Muscat said he would urge people to shop locally where possible.

He said: “A lot of ‘non-essential items’ will still be bought in the supermarkets, on Amazon. By supporting local Hull business, more money stays within Hull. I think a lot of the independents are going to be the ones hit in this pandemic.”

Here’s some of the items packs sold by The Hull Shop...

HULL 2021 CALENDAR - £8.95

Speaking about the calendar, Mr Muscat told the Mail: “We can sometimes laugh at ourselves a bit and we don’t take ourselves too seriously in Hull.

The dialect has been very popular so that is what I’ve focused this calendar on, [it’s] about tapping into all those local unique sayings and things that are not known outside of the city.

“It’s popular with Hull expats as well. People who have often left the city, but want to remember something by it. It gets sent around the world.”

The website says: “It all sense if you’ve ever been

2021 Calendar.

“The Hull 2021 calendar showcases Hull’s humour and dialect in this incredible work of mastery. The Hull humour and dialect form part of Hull’s uniqueness and this calendar showcases these innate qualities to the world. Each of the twelve months have been uniquely designed with a quirky retro theme that is sure to be a talking point on any wall.

“Feel free to share this with your friends and family and share the Hullness. The calendar has been printed in limited supply this year, so if you would like to own one we strongly advise you to order sooner rather than later to avoid any disappointment.”
