Owner’s ‘dream’ of 1950s-style tearoom on hold

CHERISHED MEMORIES SHUT DOORS DUE TO LOCKDOWN

A HULL woman has made her dream come true by opening a vintage-style café - only to be forced to close.

Cherished Memories, in Newland Avenue, took over from the spot that was formerly Lydia’s on October 21, but has now been forced to provide a takeaway and collection service only due to the new national restrictions which came into force on Thursday.

Pictures inside show old fashioned sweets on offer and scrumptious cakes, with comfy chairs and 1950s teapots and tea sets, with music from the era even playing to keep in with the theme.

It has been owner Chelsea Adams’s dream to open up a tea room ever since she was a little girl and she said business was steady before lockdown.

In order to help out those less fortunate than her, under the second lockdown, Chelsea will also be opening up a soup kitchen to support the needy on a Monday and a Friday.

“It was heartbreaking when Boris said that we had to close, as the café is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a child, and I put all my money and efforts in to it, just to be told to shut, “she said.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve got though and we have a lovely community vibe going here and offer childhood memory sweets, afternoon tea and cheeseboards.

“It is a 1950s vintage tea room with music from the 1950s playing, teapots and tea sets from the 1950s and even newspapers to read from that decade.

“I’m sure I was born in the wrong era, but the 1950s style is who I am as a person.

“I think there is nothing like this café in Hull and hope it will do really well when we can properly open again.

“We already offer a pay it with a post it note service so customers can buy a drink for a stranger and them people in need such as people on the streets or mums and kids in need come in and take a post it note for payment, no questions asked.

“I’ve been struggling before and it’s nice to help others, which we hope to do as well with the soup kitchen starting on Monday.”
