Deadliest day yet in the city

-

HULL has seen its deadliest ever day for coronavirus deaths, revealed on the same day that the city became the worst area in the country for weekly coronavirus infections.

Since the start of the pandemic, the most deaths that occurred on any single day was seven, which happened on April 24, at the height of the first wave.

On Tuesday, November 10, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust announced that they had recorded eight new Covidrelated deaths at either Hull Royal Infirmary or Castle Hill Hospital over the previous days.

Two of those people lost their lives on Sunday, November 8, while six more patients passed away on Monday, November 9.

But the trust’s announcement of a further five deaths on Wednesday, two of which were also revealed to have taken place on Monday, means that November 9 has officially become the city’s deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of eight patients are now known to have died on that day alone.

To put this into context, there were only three coronavirus deaths recorded throughout the whole of August and just five in July - a total of eight across two whole months.

There were no deaths recorded at Hull’s hospitals for 32 days between August 13 and September 14, with just four deaths recorded in September.

Before Monday, there had been six deaths in a single day on four different occasions, all between April 6 and April 30.

The worst week that has occurred to date was Monday, April 20, to Sunday, April 26, when there were sadly 30 coronavirus-related deaths.

The last seven days, however, have seen 20 deaths, following a month of 27 deaths in October - and the situation is only getting worse.

There have been 26 so far in November after 11 days. The total death toll at the city’s hospitals stood at 265 as of yesterday.
