‘My Xbox is basically a £450 doorstop’ says let-down gamer

A HULL gamer has spoken of his disappointment after buying a defective Xbox Series X, labelling the expensive console a “£450 doorstop”.

Dane Weymes, 26, of north Hull, picked up the brand new console from Smyths Toys in Clough Road as soon as the store opened at 7am on Tuesday, November 10.

But when Dane returned home to set up his new Xbox, he was met with misery after it appeared “dead” and “constantly crashed”, with no easy fix in place for the problem.

The console flew off the shelves around the globe on Tuesday and pre-orders for the gaming machines opened in September and sold out within minutes, with stock remaining in short supply.

Now, phone repair business owner Dane has been left waiting for advice from Microsoft as to how the device can be fixed after Smyths told him that Microsoft will need to rectify the issue.

“I pre-ordered the Xbox Series X and picked it up first thing from Smyths at 7am, but as soon as I got it home, I just couldn’t get it to work,” said Dane.

“I have been trying to faff with it and fix it all day, but it crashes all the time, shows green dots everywhere and no one is available to help me out so I’m stuck with a dead console, well, stuck with a brick, basically.

“It is a £450 doorstop at the moment as it’s about as much use as that.

“I’m really disappointed that I can’t get it to work and that Microsoft hasn’t got back to me.

“I’ve waited months for it and then I’ll be stuck with it for the next few months if it can’t be fixed, as they are sold out everywhere.

“All my friends’ Xbox Series X consoles are working, but I’ve seen on Twitter that someone else had the same problem, so it’s more than just me with this issue.

“I’ve been left in the dark and I was really looking forward to playing the new Assassin’s Creed on it, as the game can only be used on this new console.”

The Xbox Series X is all about power and performance, and is said to be so fast that it virtually eliminates loading times.

Despite, teething issues with the Xbox Live network crashing and the BBC iplayer not functioning on the first day, other gamers did not have the same problems as Dane.

Microsoft says the next generation console is capable of processing games in 8K definition and can render huge virtual worlds not seen in any console before it.
