We feel safer in Spain than we do in Hull

-

WE are retired and live in west Hull. I am over 70 and have long-term medical problems requiring eight different medications daily.

On March 14, we were in a Spanish resort in a monthly rental apartment when Spain went into Covid lockdown. We decided to stay rather than fly home to the UK.

Eventually, we got a flight back in mid July, after several cancellations.

When we returned, we could hardly believe the way Hull people carried on as if Covid had never existed. In Spain, masks had been compulsory for ages, yet nobody was wearing them at home. We were even laughed at for wearing them in one supermarket.

By September, we were back in the rental flat in Spain and have now applied to become Spanish residents. We feel we are so much safer out here.

You cannot enter a shop, bar, petrol station or anywhere without a mask. You will not be served. If you walk down the street without a mask and stopped by police, it is a €600 fine. Restaurants have to keep two metres between tables and you can’t have a drink sitting at the bar. Midnight to 6am curfew.

There are no hotels open now, as tourists cannot travel here. There are sufficient bars restaurants and shops open to cater for the local residents, Spanish and expat. Our landlord is one of the few with foreign tenants. We hire a car and can explore usually crowded places which are now empty.

We watch UK TV, and regularly check the Hull Daily Mail online, but can hardly believe the way that the Brits have been acting over the past few months. Have they got a death wish? Don’t they understand that wearing a mask and social distancing is for their own safety?

Come on, Hull, show sense and look after yourselves.

We saw the photos of B&M and The Range at the weekend and were astonished at the degree of stupidity. No wonder Hull is the hotspot of the UK.

We are so glad we took the chance to stay in Spain, it has given us a much safer and better lifestyle than we should have had in Hull with all the Covid problems this year.

Our biggest worry is now Brexit, becoming official Spanish residents before the end of the year is causing many headaches. We laugh to ourselves that we voted to leave, but now want to remain.

Jerry.
