Some of the people voted to leave EU Cycle marshals needed

- Steve Hewson, Hull.

I MUST respond to Mr Richards rather angry letter about my stating that the 51.4 per cent of Leave voters in the Brexit rederendum did not constistute “the people”.

On May 8, 1945, VE Day, there were joyous celebrations everywhere in Britain following the end of the war in Europe.

On June 2, 1953, the nation crowded around every television in the country to watch the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. There were parties in every street.

On January 24, 1965, the natiion paused to honour the man who led them during the Second World War.

As Churchilll’s cortege passed the London docks, the cranes lowered their jibs in salute to a national hero.

On occasions like this when the whole country acts in unison you, can genuinely say that this was “the people”; in effect speaking with the same voice and acting as one.

If this is not the case, then it is just “some of the people”. This is how politics functions. There will be majority for one option or the other; albeit a very slim one as was the case over Brexit.

But it is not everyone, and to use the phrase “the people” is misleading and false.

If you wish to test this you simply have to visit the United States, and tell those tens of millions of enraged Trump supporters who claim the election was a fraud, (including the ones with big assault rifles slung on their shoulders), that “the people” actually voted for Joe Biden.

Mr Richards says the Leavers knew precisely what they were voting for. So clearly he believes that

none of them were influenced in any way by the claim from Boris; that it would be simplicity itself to get an excellent deal that meant we retained all the main benefits of EU membership.

With only six weeks to go there is no real sign of any deal so far, and leaving without a deal would be very damaging for our national prospects in the future.

They also obviously took no notice of the writing on the big red Boris bus, telling people that if we left the EU there would be an additional £375m per week available for the NHS.

That was just a lie made up by

Cummings as part of his Vote Leave campaign, but of course it played no part in the thinking of the 51.4 per cent who voted Leave; did it?

Hughie Sizen,

Hull.

SO the city council is to extend the cycle lanes for the non-existing road cyclists.

I would like to ask who the council consulted with before making these choices?

Would they have asked any motorists? No, any pedestrians? No.

Now if the council has money to spend on a project, why not think of the pedestrians for a change and employ some cycle marshals? They could patrol every road, avenue and street in Hull, serving fixed penalty notices on all the path riders, reminding them about the new mostly unused cycle tracks. These marshals could generate enough income to pay their own salaries, for of all of them.

It would be interesting to see how many fixed penalties have been issued in Hull for path cycling in the past 12 months. I will take a guess, zero.
