‘Laughable excuse’ behind drilling that kept residents awake

COUNCIL REVEALED THAT MACHINE BROKE DOWN

RESIDENTS were kept awake by a loud drilling sound for three nights as construction was delayed after a piling machine broke down.

Residents were left angry and bemused after hearing a very loud noise, which some thought may have been a helicopter in the early hours of Saturday, November 14.

Highways England confirmed that the noise came from the upgrades being carried out in Castle Street to the A63.

The authority had previously warned residents that they had to carry the work out at night due to hearings at Hull Crown Court nearby during the day, but would aim to complete the work early.

A letter to residents from Hull City Council revealed that one of the machines on site broke down and therefore led to the work carrying on into the early hours.

The letter reads: “Following many complaints we have had urgent discussions with Highways England regarding their weekend noise and late night workings.

“This work took place at the courts site next to the A63 on the courts land and, therefore, the Ministry of Justice demanded the works took place when the court were not sitting.

“The council has been assured by Highways England that they would inform both us and residents over the times and duration of this work. “Instead it appears that their piling machine broke down and, therefore, they were late on starting and this work went on until the early hours. Highways England had sent letters to residents about the late night work, but the council say this was “wholly inadequate”.

The letter continued: “We have expressed our upset and annoyance at this set of events and have been assured that this was a oneoff and the only likely evening piling will occur is next August at the Holiday Inn on the Marina.” However, residents do not agree that this was a “one-off” and questioned if the machine had broken down three nights in a row. On Twitter, Tony Warriner posted a picture of the council’s letter, and wrote: “This is Highways England’s laughable excuse for three nights of pile driving last weekend.

“Did it break down three nights in a row then? Looking forward to the actual truth.”
