The areas of our region seeing spike in Covid-19

JUST a few short weeks ago the coronavirus infection rate in south Holderness was being suppressed.

The virus was under control and residents in areas such as Withernsea and Patrington were enjoying relative peace of mind.

But a map displaying Public Health England (PHE) data with the rates of infection in different areas and which ones have been hit the hardest, shows a very different picture.

While the vast majority of areas in East Yorkshire are now seeing a drop in cases that is not the case in this rural corner of the county.

The map is colour coded from white - where the virus is being suppressed - through to green where cases are low and then through gradually darker shades of blue as the numbers increase and finally to a claret colour.

The map also provides the seven-day rolling rates are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

At one stage south Holderness was as white as winter snow as the number of cases was negligible. Now, though, the area is covered in ominous claret with cases continuing to rise.

Last week Withernsea East saw a staggering rise in cases of 300 per cent. While the latest rise is not as dramatic, it is still a worry.

Across the East Riding there are just seven areas which have seen a rise, with most areas experiencing a drop in cases.

Here are the areas which continuing to rise. are still

Withernsea West and Keyingham has been the biggest rise in East Yorkshire with 21 cases in the last week with 60 in total and a rolling rate of 767.

■ Withernsea East and Patrington has not fared much better with 17 new cases, but the rate of increase has slowed. There are now 85 cases and a rolling of 977.1.

Willerby has suffered 11 new cases with a total now of 55. The rolling rate stands at 738.6.

■ North Ferriby and Swanland has nine new cases and a total now of 37. The rolling rate is 464.9.

■ Walkington, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey has eight new cases with a total now of 37 and a rolling rate of 412.8.

■ Molescroft has also seen a rise of eight cases with 37 in total and a rolling rate of 380.1.

East Yorkshire’s rise in infections came after Hull and the East Riding remained in the lowest tier for a long time and was only put into Tier 2 just before lockdown.

Scientists have said the previous Tier 1 had very little effect on reducing coronavirus cases, with the highest impact found from enhanced restrictions in Tier 3 areas.

While it is a brighter picture, it remains likely Hull and the East Riding will be placed in the toughest tier of restrictions once the national lockdown is lifted on December 2.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday slight changes to the tier system, which will see tougher restirctions.

But there has been further good news on the vaccine front after coronavirus vaccine development continues.
