AN open letter to the Chancellor regarding reports of public sector pay restraints

I am writing to convey my utmost disappointment and exasperation regarding the news that you might be considering public sector freezes or restraints.

Yet again, the public sector are expected to pay the price for a global tragedy. They managed to keep the country going during the global banking crash, Brexit and, now, a worldwide pandemic.

The public sector have always been there “picking up the pieces” despite being hit by crippling austerity cuts over the past ten years. They have already assisted and “done their bit” with the recovery of the economy. They should not be expected to do anymore.

I find it extremely distasteful that you would clap the public sector workers outside number 11 Downing Street on a Thursday night and then use the same hands to turn on them to slap them firmly across their faces.

As somebody who has worked in the NHS and still works in frontline services, managing a residential care unit, and have been a dedicated public servant for most of my life. I find reports of pay restraints for all but frontline NHS staff a cruel body blow to other health, care and public service employees who have worked tirelessly to get us through the pandemic.

During this time they have looked after us and now it’s time that we look after them. Clapping and warm words does not pay the bills.

I do hope that you will reconsider this position and show the public sector the respect it deserves – Now is not the time to be considering pay restraints.

Cllr Dean Kirk, Hull City Council.
