Golf mourns Page passing

-

LOCAL golfers are mourning the passing of John Page who has died after a ten year battle with prostate cancer.

A successful local business man, who together with Barry Hutchinson established H & P Freightways, he was a keen and enthusiastic golfer who joined Ganstead Park GC at its inception in 1976 becoming the club captain in 1988 when the course was extended from nine to 18 holes.

He later became the club president and in more recent times was the first chairman following the purchase of the golf club by the members from its previous private owners.

Close friend and fellow Ganstead Park member, Tony Wilkinson said: “The successful acquisition of the club by the members was very much down to John’s determination, business knowhow and enthusiasm. I am not sure it would have happened without him.”

Page and his wife Judy were for many years single figure golfers who made for a formidable mixed pairing.

He was a much travelled golfer, playing in many countries across Europe, in the States and down under in Australia where he usually spent the winter at his second home.

Not satisfied with just playing golf John gave freely of his time and energy to the organisational side of local golf and in this respect was a Past President of the East Riding Union of Golf

Clubs, The East Riding & District of Yorkshire Golf Alliance and The Hull & District Golfing Association and was a Past Captain of Captains.

A private funeral governed by COVID restrictions will be held at Octon Crematorium at 12.30pm on Tuesday, December 8.

The cortege will drive past Ganstead Park Golf Club at 11.15am enabling friends and members to pay their respects.
