THE Prime Minister has said tougher restrictions may be needed to deal with the rising cases of coronavirus.

When he was asked about the potential for a “Tier 5” by the BBC’S Andrew Marr, Boris Johnson said: “It may be that we need to do things in the next few weeks that may be tougher.

“I’m fully reconciled to that. I think the whole country is fully reconciled to that.

“There are a range of tougher measures that we may have to take.”

But the Prime Minister refused to speculate on what those measures may be.

Professor Sir Mark Walport, who is a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said it was “pretty clear” tougher restrictions were needed.

Asked if Tier 4 restrictions were enough, the former chief scientific adviser told the BBC’S Andrew Marr Show: “It’s the Tier 4 restrictions, it’s obeying them.

“It is thinking about breaking essentially every possible route of transmission we possibly can.

“Those are the things that are absolutely necessary and it is pretty clear we’re going to need more.”

The Prime Minister appeared on the Andrew Marr Show and was grilled about the reopening of schools.

When asked if parents should send their children to school, he said: “”Yes absolutely they should, in the areas where schools are open.”

Mr Johnson added: “Schools are safe. It’s very important to stress that.

“The threat to young people, kids, is very small. The risk to staff is very small.

“The benefits of education are so huge.”
