UK records 1,162 Covid deaths in just 24 hours

MORE THAN 1,100 people have died of coronaviru­s in the past 24 hours in the UK – the highest daily figure since April.

The Government confirmed that a further 1,162 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday, January 7.

This brings the UK’S Covid death total to 78,508.

The nation’s highest daily figure occurred on April 21, when 1,224 deaths were recorded.

Five more people have been reported to have died after battling the virus in Hull’s hospitals with the total in Hull and the East Riding is now at 507.

Since New Year, 25 people have died of coronaviru­s in Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill in 2021. Six deaths occurring on New

Year’s Day itself.

The number of cases in the region has also seen a significan­t increase after 266 positive test results were reported.

Cases in Hull have now risen to 13,820 since the pandemic began after an increase of 144 in the past 24 hours.

The infection rate in the city is now at 5,319.9 per 100,000 of the population.

East Riding recorded 122 new cases bringing the total in the area to 13,030 and the infection rate up to 3,819.2.

Across the UK, The Government also said that, as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 52,618 lab-confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the UK.

It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 2,889,419.

Separate figures published by the UK’S statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificat­e, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 94,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.
