Hull charity shops swamped with ‘fly-tipped’ items they do not want

-

CHARITY shops in Hull are struggling to cope with a barrage of donations as the country enters another lockdown.

Clear-outs have led to some shops bombarded with items that they can not use, with volunteers at one shop greeted with a mound of dumped items so high they could not open the door.

Another has been forced to turn away car-loads of donations amid the influx.

Now the shops are pleading with the public to help them combat the situation as it spirals out of control.

An Anlaby resident and friend of staff at Scope charity shop in Anlaby, said the charity continues to be grateful for all the donations people in the community provide, but these should not he left when the shop is shut.

The resident said: “Individuals may think they are doing a good deed by giving to charity when in actual fact this is classed as fly-tipping.

“Please wait until the shop is open to donate items and if you happen to see anyone doing this, please help combat the problem by telling them not to.”

She added: “It’s not just a mess, but encourages thieves and undesirables to raid and create more mess.

“I don’t know anyone who would want this left on their doorstep.”

A supporter of Dove House said they had been turned away with their car-load of items from the charity’s distribution centre in Malmo Road, Sutton Fields.

Karinda Jones, head of communications and events at Dove House, said they were suffering from donations being dumped outside of opening hours too. “This is fly-tipping. “There could be some really good items, and we don’t want to refuse any donations,” she said.

“Unfortunately, we can’t accept pt them if they have been left outside, and we have to pay for the removal of waste.”
