HESSLE residents described the town’s main shopping street as being like a “playground” on Saturday afternoon, claiming people were on “family outings” during lockdown.

Angry residents took to social media to express their disgust at how busy Prestongate and Hessle Square was, with families who they said had “clearly met up with others”.

The issue was discussed on the The Original Hessle Rant and Moan page, when one member said: “Prestongate is like a playground, family outings to do essential shopping.”

The post, which has more than 200 comments provoked a row, with some agreeing it was far too busy, and others defending those who were out, telling the resident who posted the comment to “stop judging others”.

One who agreed it was too busy said: “Staying at home saves lives! Simple, why don’t people understand that is beyond me! The longer people ignore it the longer lockdown will continue, it’s your choice.”

Another said: “I thought that, they are all gathered in massive crowds, my sister lives down there and it’s absolute chaos.”

Another said: “I absolutely agree. I’ll never defend Boris, but people really need to look at themselves to see why we’re not nearly rid of this virus already.”

Another added: “Have just been round little Switzerland and it’s just the same. Families out together, obviously have met up with other families. What do people not get?”

One resident, who is shielding said: “The rules are there to keep us safe from Covid.

“I lost one mate to it and people not following the rules p****s me off and yes I would report anyone breaking them, but as am shielding I don’t see what’s happening out there.”

However, many people defended those who were out, claiming they could have a valid reason to be out during lockdown, and therefore not breaking the law.

One said: “People might have to take their kids plus they might be using it as there exercise too. Life is stressful enough as it is. Give people a break.

“If you don’t like it stay home but don’t judge others for being out.”

One mum said: “Apologies if you see me and my two children. Being a single parent it’s a bit difficult leaving them at home alone. It’s frowned upon by social services these days.”

Another added: “What if one parent is a key worker doing 12 hour shifts and the other parent has the two kids and they need milk or something?

“I agree most should be alone, but don’t judge a parent going to a shop with their kids unless there’s two adults there.”

Another parent added: “What if the other parent is at work? I have to take both mine with me if I need essentials.”
