WHYTE SET FOR TIGERS
INTERNATIONAL WINGER JOINS CITY ON LOAN FROM CARDIFF
GAVIN Whyte is the perfect replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun, according to Hull City boss Grant Mccann, who feels the 24-year-old will excite Tigers fans from their sofa as the club look to win promotion.
The Northern Ireland international penned a loan deal yesterday at the KCOM Stadium until the end of the season, from Championship outfit Cardiff City and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’’s League One showdown with Blackpool, subject to international clearance.
Mccann has been on the lookout for a winger since Hakeeb Adelakun was recalled by Bristol City and the Tigers head coach has moved quickly to secure his compatriot.
“Gavin will bring pace, energy and directness. He likes to get the ball and run at people,” Mccann told the club website.
Prior to his move to South Wales, Whyte was in sparkling form at Oxford United, scoring nine times in 47 matches. That form sparked interest from a host of Championship clubs, but it was then Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock who took the plunge, paying £2m for his signature, offering him a fouryear contract.
Following Warnock’s departure, Whyte has struggled for regular football under Neil Harris, though he has been in the Northern Ireland side this season for Nations League and Euro 2020 qualifying games.
“He’s a full international and had a good time in Northern Ireland, a really good time at Oxford and followed that up with a move to Cardiff,” Mccann said.
“We’ve been searching for a replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun and he will bring real pace and directness to the front three.
“We’re delighted to get him and there was a lot of competition. We’re delighted he’s chosen us and he’ll get the fans off their sofas because he’s direct and likes to get at people.”
News about Whyte comes after the Mail confirmed yesterday that the club were trying to sign former Arsenal youngster Dan Crowley from Birmingham City, having agreed an 18-month deal for midfielder Jordan Flores earlier in the week.
