Queues build up at Mcdonald’s during lockdown

IS THIS ‘ESSENTIAL’ REASON TO LEAVE THE HOME?

A SHOCKED customer says Mcdonald’s in Hull was busier on Saturday than it ever was before lockdown.

The key worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, popped into the St Andrew’s Quay outlet during a lunch break while out on jobs and was surprised to find himself in a long queue of cars.

He said: “I was shocked by the length of the queue. In my opinion, this is busier than a normal day out of lockdown.”

He added: “Staff in the car park were having to direct cars in three lanes to enter the drive-through. This was to try and stop the traffic building up on the approach road.

“I asked the car park guy is it always this busy with customers and he said and ‘only since lockdown started.’

“Most cars had families out for a takeaway and like me only a few work vans cars. Oh, and my coffee was cold.”

The fact no one is allowed inside the restaurant at the moment might account for some of the queues in the drive-thru.

People have been told to only go out for essential reasons, such as work, exercise or medical assistance.

That raises the question as to whether a trip to get your favourite Starbucks or Costa drink, or heading out to grab a Mcdonald’s, Chinese or a pizza, can be deemed essential.

Providing a takeaway service can be a lifeline for many businesses and those at or returning from work or those at the end of their exercise stint, can drop in to one of these places.

As has been the case throughout the pandemic, it all comes down to using common sense and balancing responsibility with enjoying life as best we can.

It is difficult to suggest nipping out in your car and picking up a drink or meal through at a drivethru is putting anyone else at risk.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson has this week warned people you can catch coronavirus by touching items of those infected.

If you have to pick up a meal you expect the takeaway owners will have put every measure in place to keep you and their staff safe.

It is perhaps not essential in the strictest sense but, in terms of mental health, treating yourself to a takeaway every now and again can be very important, however, heading out can always pose an extra risk.
