Covid-19 cases in freefall across Hull and the East Riding

BUT ONE AREA WORRYINGLY HIGH AND MOVING IN WRONG DIRECTION

A MAP shows coronavirus cases in Hull are continuing to drop as two areas record very low rates, but one area stubbornly remains worryingly high.

While hospital admissions and deaths from Covid are still very high, the latest lockdown seems to be helping reduce the number of cases in the city and the East Riding.

Just a couple of days ago ten areas of Hull were recorded very high weekly rates of infection, but that has now fallen to just four.

But for the first time in a while two areas are recording weekly rates below 100 per 100,000 of the population.

During the pandemic, Public Health England (PHE) has produced a useful interactive map which displays data showing the rates of coronavirus infection in different areas.

It has opened up a glimpse into the peaks and troughs of infection rates across East Yorkshire.

The map is colour-coded from white - where the virus is being suppressed through to green where cases are low and then through gradually darker shades of blue as the numbers increase, then to a claret colour and finally to a dark brown.

The map provides the seven-day rolling rates are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

The areas on the Public Health England map are not split into council wards, but into Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA) which are designed to improve the reporting of statistics in more localised areas.

The two areas which have the lowest coronavirus rates in Hull are:

Newland Avenues - a weekly rolling rate of 86.2 per 100,000 of the population with seven cases in total which is a drop of six.

Bricknell West - a weekly rolling rate of 86.2 per 100,000 of the population with seven cases which is a drop of 19.

In the East Riding the Bridlington area has the lowest rates.

Bridlington West - a weekly rolling rate of 36.8 per 100,000 of the population with three cases in total which is a drop of seven.

Bridlington North and Bempton - a weekly rolling rate of 70.4 per 100,000 of the population with seven cases in total which is a drop of two.

But the weekly rate in Southcoates Central and Docks remains very high.

Despite falling on Friday, the rate has gone up once more and now stands at a worrying weekly rate of 1,009.2 per 100,000 of the population with 89 cases which is a rise of 59.

It maybe because of the docks or Hull Prison which are in the area, but Southcoates Central and Docks could probably be classed as the worst affected in East Yorkshire.

It was the only area with three or more cases at the end of August and posted the worst rate of any area at any time during the pandemic with a whopping 1,122.6 in the week ending November 7. Since then it has not posted a rate below 200.

Last week, cases rose drastically, reaching a weekly rolling rate of 1,031.9 per 100,000 of the population which is close to the rate it recorded at its peak in November.

The other areas still recording high rates in Hull and the East Riding area:

Bilton Grange - a weekly rolling rate of 730.4 per 100,000 of the population with 49 cases in total which is a rise of 30.

Southcoates West - a weekly rolling rate of 473.2 per 100,000 of the population with 35 cases in total which is a rise of 19.

Greenwood - a weekly rolling rate of 432.6 per 100,000 of the population with 47 cases in total which is a rise of 16.

Hessle West - a weekly rolling rate of 426.2 per 100,000 of the population with 27 cases in total which is a drop of one.
