EU vote was clearly democracy in action

- Rob Milner, Hedon.

OH no, more Brexit aftermath!

In addition to Mary Carrick taking Simon Bailey to task over his referendum views, Norman Hawkes has thrown his two penn’orth in once again regarding the legality of the outcome of the EU Referendum of June 2016.

Both Mary and Norman maintain - quite correctly - that the result of the referendum was advisory only, and it had be made law by an act of Parliament.

In a previous letter (Mail Box, January 1) I have already mentioned that the bar for leaving the EU should possibly have been set higher than 50 per cent, but it wasn’t, so the perception of 99 per cent of those who voted was that the outcome was to be decided on a simple majority, which would then be ratified by the Government, without argument.

Not everyone is an academic, nor well acquainted with every aspect of voting legalities, so the perception of the vast majority was based on the need to achieve a simple majority. (Sorry to repeat myself, but that word “perception” is very important).

I voted to leave the EU, but if the majority who took part, had voted to remain, I would have just got on with my little life, as I am sure most other “leavers” would have done.

Why is it that so many

“remainers” still find it difficult to accept a result that has actually, despite any misgivings, been arrived at in a manner which most people would agree was the very definition of democracy in action?

I’m afraid it’s too late to change things now, at least until a pro-return government is elected, by which time, in many opinions, the EU as we know it, may well have become a “busted flush”.
