THREE people involved in a family dispute, which led to a teenager, 16, having her head banged against the pavement, have avoided jail.

Police were alerted to a residential street in Goole on October 29 last year after reports a man had allegedly been threatened with a firearm.

“This was a large family dispute,” said prosecuting barrister James Lake as he outlined the case against Clarissa Airey, 32, her husband Nathan Airey, 31, and family member Thomas Farrow, 33, at Hull Crown Court.

“A couple were at home in their living room when they heard people shouting and banging outside.”

CCTV captured a pick-up truck arriving in Kingsway at around 5.45pm where a large group of people congregated in the street.

One of the complainants stepped outside his door to check out the commotion, where he was confronted by both Nathan Airey and Farrow.

Mr Lake said: “At that point they had armed themselves with weapons and began charging towards the property threatening unlawful violence.”

The couple’s 16-year-old daughter then returned home where she was confronted by 32-year-old Clarissa Airey, a carer.

“[Airey] took her to the floor and started banging her head on the pavement,” said Mr Lake. “There was a suggestion of a firearm, so police became involved very quickly and all three were arrested.”

Mr Lake told the court that there was no evidence to support that the incident involved a firearm.

The 16-year-old suffered scratches, bruising and a lump to the back of her head. Six people were arrested by police at the time, but only the Aireys and Farrow were charged.

All three defendants appeared at Hull Crown Court to be sentenced, with both Nathan Airey, of Morecambe, Lancashire, and Farrow, of Coronation Road, Doncaster, pleading guilty to affray.

Clarissa Airey, a mother-of-four and wife of Nathan Airey, stood in the dock to be sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All three defendants had no previous convictions.

News of their arrest on October 29 was widely reported by the press in East Yorkshire and in Lancashire, which barrister Rachel Scott, mitigating for Clarissa Airey, said cost her client her job as a community carer.

Ms Scott also revealed that the 16-year-old complainant had formerly been in the care of Mrs Airey.

“This is serious offending,” said Recorder Singh QC. “Had you not been of previous good character, this would have resulted in an immediate custodial sentence.”

Recorder Singh QC sentenced both Nathan Airey and Thomas Farrow to a 12-month community order and must complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

Clarissa Airey was given an 18-month community order and was also sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work.
