IT is one of the most historic areas of Hull, but one residents says the area around Land of Green Ginger has become a disgusting mess thanks to chewing gum.

Manor Street is perhaps Hull’s stickiest street thanks to the amount of gum spat on the ground and one woman who lives there is not happy.

It is difficult to know what areas are pavement and what is gum due to the sheer amount trampled into the walkways.

The woman, who wishes remain anonymous, contacted Mail about the problem and pictures show just how bad it is.

She said: “The chewing gum

to the the outside my house is disgusting.

“I live in the city centre and there are big offices across the road from me. People are always standing on my door step and smoking or throwing their rubbish in my bins that aren’t there for them to use.

“But that isn’t the main issue - it’s the chewing gum they leave on the floor.

“It was cleaned once and I remember looking outside and thinking the whole floor had been retarmacked because I’d never actually seen the floor before as it was covered in gum.

“It is all very frustrating. There are no bins at all on the street and there are at least a couple of hundred people work in the area.

“It’s a very historic part of town and it’s a shame to see the floor in such a state.”

Chewing gum is notoriously difficult for councils across the country to remove.

A couple of years ago Hull City Council purchased two special machines designed specifically to remove chewing gum from the streets.
