Council urges homeowners to be aware of flooding risk

-

HULL City Council has called on residents to defend their homes against floods ahead of a month’s worth of rain in the coming days.

Hull City Council gully crews are set to be deployed to keep roads clear and tackle any flooding resulting from expected heavy rain expected.

Flood storage lagoons are also being emptied after the Met Office forecasted between 30mm and 60mm of rainfall over Hull by Thursday morning.

Council Environment portfolio holder Councillor Mike Thompson said residents should also make preparations including ensuring they have enough essential items to get through the coming days.

It comes as the Government’s Flood Information Service warned homes could be flooded and travel disrupted as rivers and waterways swell and drains fill up.

Hull usually sees between 50mm and 60mm of rainfall during January.

Cllr Thompson said: “Unfortunately, we are expecting some heavy rainfall over the coming days and we are working with our partners including the East Riding Council, Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water on a combined operational response to ensure our flood assets work as designed, and to share resources.

“However, we also need communities and individuals to be prepared.

“These can be simple actions such as signing up to flood warnings, or preparing an emergency flood kit full of essential items for you and your family, or a flood plan, ensuring you know what action to take if your home or business is flooded.”
