A MOTORCYCLIST who hit a deer while riding at 60mph “miraculously” escaped life-changing injuries.

Monday’s episode of A&E: After Dark on Channel 5 tells the story of 54-yearold Tracy, who was thrown 50ft after she struck the animal on her motorbike after ending up at the “wrong place, wrong time”.

After saying she could not feel her legs, doctors feared potential paralysis and sent her for urgent scans.

It was only when those results came back that medics discovered she had “miraculously” avoided any long-term injuries - though she was found to have suffered a number of small fractures in her back.

Luckily, with the help of the nurses, she was walking around the ward a short time later.

Monday’s episode of series two of the hit show, which tells the story of the night shift at Hull Royal Infirmary during the coronavirus pandemic, also aired some of the problems doctors faced as a result of new rules preventing family members joining patients in the hospital.

The emergency department was especially busy after the reopening of pubs in the summer, viewers were told.

Junior sister Kirsty said her family would be “mortified” if they heard some of the name-calling levelled at her during her shifts as patients and their families reacting angrily to the rules, including requirements to wear masks.

“I’m a nurse, I’m not a security guard,” she said.

“I don’t come to work to be a bouncer.” The episode also showed a grisly and extremely bloody injury suffered by John, 56, who had been carrying glass jars when an accident caused them to smash in his hand.

As the doctor tried to survey the gruesome wound, the blood loss took hold and John fainted in front of him.

Thankfully, the injury between his palm and index finger did not lead to the long-term loss of the use of his thumb.

Elsewhere, police had brought in 19-year-old Jai to be assessed after a drunken attack at a party.

There were fears he may have suffered a bleed on the brain after he lost conscious and suffered seizure-like symptoms as a result of the attack.

Doctors had to encourage Jai, who said he lived in Goole and was worried about missing the last train home, to stay for the results of his scans for fear of him leaving and dying alone.

Meanwhile, strongman Adam was left devastated after an injury in the gym threatened his first appearance at a Hull’s Strongest Man competition.

Viewers were told the injury to his arm would need more time to recover, jeopardising his place in the contest.
