Region’s total Covid cases tops 30,000

THE number of coronaviru­s cases registered across East Yorkshire since the pandemic began has exceeded 30,000.

It has almost been a year since the first Covid case was confirmed in the UK and the total number of positive test results in Hull and the East Riding over that time is now at 30,139.

This is an increase of 143 from the day before, with 80 new cases confirmed in Hull alone.

The city’s total is now up to 15,459 since the pandemic began and the infection rate has risen to 5,950.9 per 100,000 of the population.

East Riding recorded 63 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total in the area to 14,680. The infection rate there is now at 4,302.8.

Three more deaths have also been recorded at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, bringing the total to 641.

Nationwide, the Government said a further 592 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of yesterday, bringing the UK total to 98,531.

Separate figures published by the UK’S statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificat­e, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 115,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on yesterday, there had been a further

22,195 lab-confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the UK.

Government data up to January 24 shows of the 7,044,048 jabs given in the UK so far, 6,573,570 were first doses – a rise of

220,249 on the previous day’s figures.

At a Downing Street briefing yesterday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed four-in-five of people aged 80 and over have been vaccinated among 6,573,570 vaccines carried out so far.
