POLICE officers continue to investigate a Hull house fire that claimed the lives of a ten-year-old girl and her father – one year on from the tragedy.

Ten-year-old Paige Bolton died as a result of “smoke inhalation” alongside her father Garry Bolton on January 25, 2020, at their home in Wensley Avenue, off Cottingham Road.

The schoolgirl died at Hull Royal Infirmary, but it was not until almost three months later when her inquest opened at Hull Coroners’ Court.

Both Paige and Garry’s deaths are still subject to a full inquest, which is yet to take place.

In the wake of Paige’s death, her mum Cherie Rangeley described how her daughter was a “sensitive but stubborn” little girl.

In a statement read out to the pre-inquest hearing at the time, Ms Rangeley described the heartbreaking moment she had to identify her daughter.

“It took me forever to walk in the room because I knew what was around the corner and I could just not believe it,” she said.

“When I saw her I could not let go of her. When I was meant to go I kept going back in the room. I couldn’t let go of her.”

After spotting the fire, neighbours tried desperately to act, but were unable to save Paige or her father.

A year to the day since the tragic blaze, Humberside Police have confirmed that inquiries into the circumstances around still ongoing.

Paying tribute to Paige in the week following the fire, Cherie described the turmoil of seeing other children in the street and believing them to be her daughter.

“It is doing my head in. I’m walking down the street seeing little people with red hair like Paige. It is just breaking me so much.

“She was so shy. She found it hard to socialise with friends.

“When she first went to school at Croxby she did meet a good bunch of friends and we used to do tea parties together and have parties and stuff.

“She was a very shy, sensitive but stubborn little girl. She was like a little comedian as well, she took after me. the fire are

“She was stubborn.

“She was very reserved. Very, very shy. She was very delicate.

“You’d walk down the street with just funny but very her and even if a lorry went past she would grab you.”
