CITY STARS REWARDED FOR VICTORY

-

THREE Hull City players have been named in the League One Team of the Week for their part in

Saturday’s scintillating 4-0 win at promotion rivals Portsmouth, while boss Grant Mccann was named its manager.

Two own goals from Jack Whatmough, a Honeyman finish and a fizzing strike from Josh Magennis in stoppage time sealed an emphatic win which kept City top of the league, moving four points clear of Kenny Jackett’s Blues.

Man of the Match George Honeyman, midfield partner Richie Smallwood and goalkeeper George Long claimed places in the side after delivering exceptional displays as the Tigers romped to what was a crucial win at Fratton Park, gaining revenge for their 2-0 home defeat a month ago.

Honeyman, who scored the crucial second goal, having created the first and fourth, notched up a rating of 8.6, with Smallwood rated at 8.2 and Long 7.4.

The ex-sunderland man has been a regular feature in the Team of the Week, and takes his place in midfield in the overall Team of the Season so far, along with left-back Callum Elder, who was named in the midweek side following the 3-0 success over Accrington.

“We had to be good coming here,” the City chief said of a huge victory.

“Portsmouth are a very strong team at this level, an excellent team.

“We had to be energetic, we had to match their energy, we had to be aggressive on second balls.

“We had to make sure we were good defensively and I thought we were. That was the carrot for us to go and score some goals at the other end.

“Portsmouth were the form team in the league coming into this. They’d only lost once or twice in 15 games. They’d kept clean sheets in their last six games. It was going to be difficult and we knew we’d have to be good defensively.”
