Bold plans to give salon 21st-century makeover
BOLD new plans to revamp a hair salon on an east Hull street will dramatically change the landscape.
The owner of the end-of-terrace property in Chamberlain Road promises to create a “local jewel” by completely transforming the property into a “family home fit for 21st-century living”, as well as transforming the salon.
The street is largely made up of red brick terrace homes and also include the Dove House Hospice and playing fields.
But the new plans would create something completely different, which some may deem outlandish, while others may see as the way forward.
Ettridge Architecture Ltd has submitted a planning application on behalf of the owner and admits it will change the area.
In the design and access statement, the applicant says: “The street scene will be changed. We believe that it will be for the better, due to the carefully composed elevations and varied forms – giving a sense of modernity and intrigue to the prominent corner site.
“The overall massing and scale is kept within that of the locality, though in a less traditional manner.
“Essentially, we propose a highquality, striking building - designed to add to the vitality of the area.
“The residential extension is designed as an exciting family home fit for 21st-century city living.
“The client wanted to open up the dwelling to the views of playing fields and the southerly aspect. He also wanted to bring the area to life and create a local jewel on the corner for the two streets.
“We appreciate that corner buildings add more to any townscape than a mid-terrace plot ever could.
“We propose that the corner will be intriguing and modern in style, from an obvious 21st-century origin, with areas of glass, cladding and planted terraces.”
The applicant also says the new plans will help future-proof the hair salon during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The design and access statement says: “It also includes good quality home-office accommodation, which is becoming ever more important, especially with the current Covid restrictions.
“The salon is also designed to suit social distancing, as the medical profession is predicting that Covid measures will last up to five years. These proposals will help ‘future-proof’ the business.
“The proposed flat roofed extension to the front is designed as a spacious, airy and ventilated waiting area for the current Covid crisis. The client would accept this as a temporary approval if deemed necessary.”
But not everyone is happy with the plans.
One neighbour has submitted objections saying it will overshadow their property and will infringe on their privacy.
Another member of the public simply does not think the plans fit with the area.
The objection says: “The proposed plans for the site will not, in my opinion, fit in with the look of the area. I do not see how the application can be permitted to alter the shape of the roof.”
The application will be considered by Hull City Council’s planning committee within the next couple of months.
