Extra cash is allocated for arcade refurb
CITY councillors are set to spend an extra £605,000 to complete the refurbishment of a longstanding eyesore in Beverley
Road.
The council bought two run-down properties in the middle of a Victorian parade of shops and flats overlooking Beverley Road known as Brunswick Arcade when their crumbling condition became a public safety risk.
The authority used emergency powers to erect scaffolding to secure the buildings when they were still in private ownership amid concerns they could collapse.
The scaffolding is still in place and stands partially on the road itself.
A £870,000 budget was then allocated by the council to rebuild the historic facade while creating a new development behind it.
However, when the council went through a tendering process, the estimated cost of work submitted by interested firms was much higher.
Now a further £605,000 is being allocated towards the project. This funding will be used to permanently address the structural problems with the adjoining buildings, rebuild the facade and inside of the buildings, and provide a permanent end use of residential on the upper floors and retail space on the ground floor.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for regeneration said: “The restoration of Brunswick Arcade is a critical component of the refurbishment of Beverley Road.
“This is an ideal opportunity to bring this part of Beverley Road back to being an attractive area.”
