SIMPLY NO EXCUSES

GRANT Mccann could offer no excuses after watching his Hull City side produce arguably their poorest performance of the season, going down 1-0 at bottom side Burton Albion.

A 90th minute Jonny Smith goal earned a priceless victory for the Brewers, who delivered an inspired display in restricting the top scorers to not a single shot on target in 90 minutes at the Pirelli Stadium.

City’s best hope of a goal came when Keane Lewis-potter headed over in the first half before Greg Docherty crashed an effort off the bar in the second period, though they rarely looked like breaking a resolute defence.

The wretched defeat allowed in-form Doncaster Rovers to move level in second, ahead of the Tigers facing leaders Lincoln City tomorrow.

However, after the weekend’s results Rovers also have 48 points, but with three games in hand.

“We just weren’t good enough,”

Mccann fumed. “We lacked any sort of killer instinct about us.

“Things were petering out in the final third. We didn’t look like scoring - at all.

“Movement wasn’t good enough, cleverness wasn’t good enough in and around the box.

“When we did cross the ball, it got blocked or hit the first man. When we shot, it went over the crossbar.

“It’s unlike us because we’ve been really good in that aspect this season.

“We’ve come unstuck with not taking any sort of chance that came our way and getting punished off a mistake. That’s why we’ve lost the game.

“It’s just not good enough. It’s not what we’ve come to expect from this group of players this year.

“What I said to them (afterwards) was, ‘if we’re not going to win the game, don’t lose it.’

“We switch off. It’s a loose ball from Reece (Burke).

“One ball in behind our back four, behind Callum Elder and it’s a goal.”
