Catalans wrap up Whare deal

-

CATALANS Dragons have completed the signing of New Zealand international Dean Whare.

The New Zealand international has finally secured a Super League deal after being offered to clubs midway through last year.

Leigh Centurions were among the clubs understood to have shown interest in the 31-year-old, but he has joined Steve Mcnamara’s side on a two-year deal.

Whare arrives from Penrith, who reached last year’s NRL Grand Final. The centre made eight appearances for the Panthers last season.

During an 11-year career in the NRL, Whare made 155 appearances, scoring 40 tries. He has also represented the Kiwis eight times.

His arrival is a timely one for the Dragons, who continue to manage the uncertainty surrounding Israel Folau’s future with the club.

Reports continue to link the controversial centre with an exit from the club, though Catalans have insisted Whare is a replacement for David Mead, the Papua New Guinea captain who has joined Brisbane Broncos.

Lewis Tierney has also departed for Leigh, leaving Les Dracs short of depth.

Their pack also remains low in personnel. Captain Remi Casty, Sam Moa, Antoni Maria and Mickael Simon have all left. Gil Dudson and Mike Mcmeeken have both made the move to Perpignan.

“I am very excited for the new opportunity to be joining the Catalans Dragons,” Whare said.

“I am looking forward to meeting the team and embracing the French culture. There are some exciting times ahead and I can’t wait to start.”
