THE NIGHT PREDATOR

THE FULL STORY ON HORRIFIC MURDER IN OAK ROAD PLAYING FIELDS

- By SOPHIE CORCORAN sophie.corcoran@reachplc.com @sophcorcoran

STALKING Hull’s streets, searching for his next victim, Pawel Relowicz must have felt invincible. For almost two years, he went undetected. Invisible almost, committing his sickening crimes under the cover of darkness.

To many, seeing Pawel Relowicz in the street would not cause them to think twice or worry about what he was up to.

A baby-faced, dad-of-two with glasses is not what naturally comes to mind when you think of his sick, perverted crimes.

But Pawel Relowicz is a monster and hid a dark and terrible secret. And yesterday after six days of deliberation a jury found him guilty of the horrific rape and murder of Hull student Libby Squire, 21, on February 1, 2019.

During the day he would take care of his wife and children at their home in Raglan Street, pay the bills and work long hours at Karro meat factory in Malton.

But at night, he would prowl the city’s streets, getting a kick out of seeing the terror in young women’s eyes as they realised what he was doing. It was the stuff of nightmares. He was the strange bogeymen looking through windows, the shadows on the contours of his face lit up by indoor lights against the night. A sight that would cause your blood to run cold.

Relowicz saw the blind panic in a woman’s eyes as she realised he was practically climbing through her window to watch her and her boyfriend have sex.

He probably heard the loud heartbeats of two young girls as he followed them while masturbating, step by step to their home in

Wellesley Avenue before he ejaculated on their door.

He left “calling cards” – condoms filled with his semen – safe in the knowledge that his lack of previous convictions meant his DNA was not on a police database and he would not be found.

For 19 months, he went undetected and was free to roam, his crimes escalating and occurring more regularly until he ripped away the life of a young woman who had found happiness in Hull.

By committing this sickening crime, Relowicz’s web unwrapped and it was here he made his mistake.

On February 1, 2019, Relowicz raped and murdered Libby Squire.

Libby had been turned away from the Welly club and drunk, confused, disorientated and hypothermic, made her way to Beverley Road where she fell into the path of Relowicz in what was described during his trial at Sheffield Crown Court as a “terrible twist of fate.”

Relowicz was that evening, looking for what he put as “easy sex” and an opportunity to offend. He parked up on Haworth Street, fuelled with an “insatiable” thirst that had been building up for the three hours he had already been prowling the streets without success.

When he came across Libby, Relowicz claimed he approached her out of “curiosity” and a desire to help.

But he was no knight in shining armour. Relowicz stalked Libby along Beverley Road, hiding in the shadows and intercepting her before leading her to Haworth Street and his car.

There, he took her to Oak Road playing fields, where he had been earlier in the evening in the hope of finding a victim,, and raped and killed her.

In what was described as a “Freudian slip” by prosecutor Richard Wright QC, Relowicz told the jury during the trial that as she got out of the car, Libby “ran away” before she fell to the ground.

In another, he told the jury he had put her seatbelt on for two reasons – the first, so the alarm would not go off in his car warning the passenger to put the seatbelt on, the second,

so she “couldn’t jump out.”

Relowicz went on to claim the two had consensual sex and he last saw her as she “screamed and shouted” at him as he drove away from Oak Road.

However, Sam Alford, who lives on Oak Road, said he heard “desperate screams” coming from the direction of the River Hull at the same time Relowicz said he and Libby were on Oak Road. He denied hearing the screams.

He also denied that it was him later seen by Mr Alford emerging from the bushes.

Relowicz went home, put his clothes in the wash and had a bath, but just two hours later was back at Oak Road, this time for just four-and-a-half minutes, which the prosecution said gave him enough time to “clean up” after himself.

Soon after, he started telling a series of lies that would lead to his downfall.

During the course of the two years between murdering Libby and standing trial, Relowicz concocted five different versions of what happened on January 31 and February 1 2019.

These lies did not let up during the trial, where the arrogant and cocky Relowicz tripped himself up so many times.

As he lied to the jury and talked about his “problem” – committing sex acts against women – Libby’s brave and dignified mum Lisa shook her head.

Because as much as Relowicz talked about this problem and his “fetish” he seemed to almost blank out the fact that there were women who had been terrified –some so much they had to leave their homes.

Something else Relowicz omitted from his evidence was any remorse or empathy – not just for Libby and her family – but the other women he had been targeting since 2017.

Throughout the trial he stayed emotionless – only sometimes showing anger and frustration as he was quizzed.

One of these incidents occurred when Mr Wright mentioned that the sex act he had committed in Newland Avenue had not “taken very long” so therefore the fact he was only with Libby at Oak Road playing fields for just seven-and-a-half minutes was no issue.

Relowicz spoke through an interpreter, but having a better understanding of English

than he could speak it, would often interrupt them before they had finished interpreting the question Mr Wright had asked.

He huffed and puffed through his answers – many a time giving the excuse that he “did not want his wife to know he had been unfaithful.” He gave this after writing in an official court document that stated he had had consensual sexual intercourse with Libby.

Relowicz smirked through his evidence – and was even called out by Mr Wright when he laughed while in the witness box after being asked how well he understood English.

This was not the demeanour of an innocent man who had had consensual sex with a young woman and had left her alive and well but found himself up on trial for her rape and murder.

As Mr Wright said, it was “very convenient” that Libby had ended up in the River Hull after Relowicz had raped her.

After telling three versions of what had happened before she was even found, Relowicz was more than likely shocked that her body had been discovered and his DNA was still on it.

In his first interviews, Relowicz taunted police who were desperately searching for Libby in the hope of returning her home safe.

He told officers to “check their cameras” and “check for DNA” – knowing full well the reason he was in custody was because they had checked their cameras and they knew he was the last known person to have seen Libby.

Relowicz was in control, he knew exactly where Libby was and he knew he had something the police wanted – the truth.

Relowicz got off on that power just as he did with the power he held over Libby and the other young girls he terrorised.

He lied about what happened. Only Pawel Relowicz knows what happened to Libby Squire.

Relowicz showed no remorse for his horrific crimes against women.

He smirked and laughed while just a few feet away a family grieved because he took away from them their “beautiful baby girl”.

Now, justice will be served on this twisted, evil predator Pawel Relowicz.
