Hull Daily Mail

Cynical political abuse of community goodwill

- D Phillips.

I RECENTLY received, through my letterbox, a paper titled “Kingston Upon Hull News”, which, on reading, turned out to be Liberal Democrat campaigning material regarding the forthcoming local elections scheduled for May.

As a floating voter, I have come to expect a barrage of such material and, as someone who believes passionately in my civic responsibility to vote for individuals who will do the best for my city, I study each with care.

I also follow the suggestions within to find out more by visiting various websites, including the one that details what they call “Positive Plan”.

This plan transpires to be little more than some bland statements that nobody of any political persuasion could object to (eg prioritise health, maintain parks and play areas, support vulnerable groups), with no detail about how they would actually go about it or fund services.

Combined with assertions that the current administration are mismanaging the funding available to them when what is clear for all local authorities (Tory, Lib Dem or Labour) is that the 50 per cent cuts in funding from central government has been a huge challenge.

Interestingly, Hull City Council has achieved a balanced budget this year despite loss of revenue income from theatres, leisure centres, rents, etc, and increased financial pressure arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

But what concerns me most about the news sheet is the cynical way in the Liberal Democrats claim credit for the care and support given by individuals, neighbours, families, church groups, voluntary groups, businesses and key workers have provided during the past 12 months.

One of the things arising from the pandemic that gives us the greatest hope is the way in which communities have come together to offer practical and emotional support to one another. Bringing people together regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, financial situation or status for the benefit of all.

Now is a time for continued unity and partnership working – abusing this goodwill for political gain is abhorrent – it does nothing to engender trust or draw me to giving them my vote.

So, I must now await the missives from other political parties.
